Question: Is it really necessary to change transmission fluids at 100 thousands miles?

I was told the transmission fluid/oil? In my Rav 4 is dark brown and it should be changed soon. This is my 4th Toyota, never changed it in any of them, and they all ran fine even with over 200thousands miles. This one has about 116thousands miles.
